The Mist movie

I went ahead and rented The Mist so that I could watch it over spring break, but I didn't know what to expect because I remember the movie trailers being very vague. I had heard that it wasn't that scary and that it had an unexpected ending. However, I didn't expect it to be so bloody and to have such a horrible ending! My fiance and I were upset by most of the movie, and he wanted me to turn it off but my curiousity had the best of me so I wouldn't do it. I just had to know how it would end. I figured it would be disturbing because it is Stephen King, but the ending is almost too sad to handle. I don't want to spoil anything for anybody who hasn't read it or seen the movie, so I won't give any details. I should have read it first, but I think I would have been too mad to watch the movie. Now I don't know if I can sit through reading it. Does anyone know how well the movie followed the book or if it is a little different? I would like to know before I attempt to read it. Overall the story was interesting but it left me feeling really depressed and disappointed. That may also have something to do with the fact that we were watching it alone in our new mostly empty apartment in Cincinnati, so being in a strange new area didn't help. Next time I watch a disturbing movie, I want to be somewhere more comforting!

  1. They had The Mist playing this year when we went to Atrox Factory, which is a Halloween haunted house like Sloss Fright Furnace for those that didn't know. I agree with you, the ending is pretty...I don't know the word I'm looking for...disappointing, I guess? I didn't want to say it's hopeless, because in the grand scheme of things it's actually hopeful. The circumstances of the main characters at the end of the movie is really depressing. I don't know how closely it follows the book, but I have a feeling that the endings are pretty similar. The ending of the movie just sounds like something Stephen King would come up with.

  2. Actually, the book ends a lot differently than the movie. I won't exactly say it's upbeat, but it leaves a lot more room for hopefulness than the movie does. When I saw the movie, it killed me, because I had already read the book, and was expecting it to end a lot differently. I was so upset by the movie's ending! But don't let it discourage you from reading the book - the endings are very different.
I'm pretty partial to the book's ending, although I think I read somewhere that Stephen King actually thought the movie's ending fit better than the ending he had written.

  3. Yea, I heard the book's ending is much different and much better. I was personally disgusted with the movie and it is unfortunately on my top-hated movies. haha. I think I would like the book. It's weird. I can read things like that, but seeing it is different. I don't have much taste for gore so my opinion doesn't mean much for those who do like it. It's just the ending of the movie just made me so mad with the movie. (I hope the book is better, though!)

  4. I agree with you guys on the ending to The Mist. I remember being really angry and depressed when that movie was over and feeling so sorry for the protagonist. I felt like I had just wasted a 2 hours of my life. I hope you guys aren't lying to me about the book being better.
