The Wrong Grave
I really enjoyed this story, but I am a little confused. So the wrong dead girl really was Bethany, and she didn't want Miles to know? Did she put all the poetry in the elephant/St. Francis statue, including the poetry Miles was looking for? The statue sort of reminds me of Mr. Blah-Blah.

I was kind of confused as why she was hiding her true identity from Miles as well. As for the poetry, I read it as all the poetry was placed in the statue.
ReplyDeleteI liked that she hid her identity from Miles. It was like he was in love with the idea of her, and not really her. Whereas her mom, who recognized her right away, could see it was her because she truly loved her. I was a bit confused about the hair and tattoo, she seemed to not have full control of them, and tried to keep them calm. But I think a really neat concept was that we can be whoever we want after we die, a different name, different hair, tattoos, anything.
ReplyDeleteMe too (about the identity part) You would think if she revealed herself to her mom, then she would also want to reveal herself to other people. I also wonder why she looked like that. Did she choose that? I mean can she do whatever she wants not that she was dead? Did her physical body age or did she decide to appear that way?
ReplyDeleteMiles reminded me of every guy I ever dated. I agree. He was in love with the idea of having this perfect poetry worthy girlfriend, but he couldn't even recognize her. Also I was so mad that he only wanted to get his poetry back. Way to go mom ! I was so glad she recognized her. It reminded me of how my mom is always there for me when the male gender can be so disappointing.
ReplyDeleteThat's an interesting take on it Cassandra, but I think Bethany should have stated that was her motive if it really was that deep. She makes it sound like she was just playing a joke. I don't know if she didn't care enough to tell him the truth because she has changed so much in death or if she was always that way. It's possible she didn't take their relationship that seriously since they were young.
ReplyDeleteI think that was the hardest part about this story... Not really knowing how she was before she died, which feels kind of weird saying. We only know what Miles said of her, but it appears he did not really know her.
ReplyDeleteI really liked this story. Even in its short nature, it brought so many emotions and memories of high school shallowness back in my mind. I was surprised that I felt so sad when Bethany had to leave her mom. I wondered why she couldn't stay, how she came back to life, what she had been doing in the box for 11 months...
