"The Cloak"

"The Cloak" by Robert Bloch was a fun story to read and a far different take on Vampires. Apparently all it takes to become Vampire-like is to wear one of their cloaks. The story has a twist at the end which, In my opinion, was a little obvious. Maybe I am jsut to cynical for twists of that nature to phase me.

As for Bloch himself, I found a few interesting tidbits here. Some of those tidbits include:
  1. When Bloch was nine he saw a version of The Phantom of the Opera which had him sleeping with the light on.
  2. Influenced by Poe and H.P. Lovecraft
  3. Once said "Comedy and horror are opposite sides of the same coin," which plays out in this story.

  1. I think it's interesting to note the different characteristics vampires have in each story. I mean you have Anne Rice's Interview with a Vampire to movies such as 30 Days of Night to the more recent Twilight saga. Each writer (whether for book or movie) has this idea of vampires, yet each one takes the liberty of taking their own ideas and placing them on vampires such as the way in which someone becomes a vampire, or what happens if a vampire is in the sunlight. I'm interested to see what some of the oldest recorded stories of vampires say about them and to see the change throughout history.

  2. I think this was my favorite story ! I knew the girl was a vampire too. My favorite part about this story was seeing the different phases the man went through in realizing that he was actually turning into a vampire. In other stories you see someone getting bitten and immediatley going into a blood-thirsty rage, where as this character had a more sophistocated transformation. It kind of leaves you with that feeling that any one could be a vampire if they wanted to.
