Since I'm not responsible for talking about a specific story this week and we keep saying that the dark fantastic can encompass all sorts of media, not just literature I figured I would write something about one of my true joys in life. LOST.
I believe that this show definitely belongs to the world of dark fantasy because what other show brings you polar bears, frozen donkey wheels, and "Smokey" the friendly island black cloud that enjoys bashing peoples brains in.
In my opinion Lost deserves to be in the conversation when it comes to the greatest television shows ever not just because its a great show, but because it has such a rich mythology and take so many cues from different artforms such as other shows and many different literary texts like Lord of the Flies and Alice in Wonderland.
Since this course runs through the final season of Lost theres a good chance I'll continue posting about this amazing show and spoil just about everything that happens this season because its just too hard not to talk about a show this good, especially when it airs on Tuesday nights and its all I raelly want to talk about on Wednesdays.

I love Lost, although I am always so lost while watching it. My wife actually figures most things out way before I do, despite the fact that she hasn't seen seasons 3-5.
ReplyDeleteYay for HD DVRs though because I don't think I could sit still for commercials.
On another note, the creators said that this season will be full of answers. Does it seem to you like they haven't really answered that much yet?
Well, before the season began they said that we would still be left with questions when it's all over. For example, they won't be telling us what the island is or how it has it's power.
ReplyDeleteI loved LOST when it first came out, but I had to quit watching it my senior year. I'd really love to get back into it, but I'd be so out of my depth by now. Is it still as awesome as it started out or has it lost steam along the way?
ReplyDeleteAccording to Hulu's Lost page:
ReplyDelete"All of Seasons 1-5 will be available for streaming through December 31, 2010.
We are able to post the last five episodes of Lost to air on TV. The episodes posted may vary based on ABC’s on-air schedule."
So if you have the time, you can watch them all online for free.
As for if it has lost its steam, I don't think so. It is, of course, confusing as ever, but that is part of Lost's appeal to me. Albeit, I need to read recaps like Doc Jensen's to understand what in the world is going on, and realize how much I have forgotten from previous seasons.
The bad thing about Doc Jensen is that guy is so deep into the show its like reading a grad students thesis paper trying to figure out what he thought of the last episode. Thats the one thing thats been so great about the show as its continued. Its mythology is so deep that everyone can pull their own different thoughts and conclusions out of the exact same episode or line of dialogue. I think thats the one thing that confuses people the most about Lost as its gone on. Its really hard to just jump right in and start watching season 6. You definitely want to throw yourself head first into the show and start with the first season and watch the most amazingly confusing television show in recent memory..(sorry to all fans of The Wire)..
ReplyDeleteThanks for the heads up about the Hulu stream. I know what I'm doing over Spring Break, now.
ReplyDeleteOh, I definitely agree that Doc Jensen is deep. I kinda enjoy it, not to be too punny but even his recaps have me Lost at times but they do clear up a lot and make observations I never would have fathomed.
