Dirty Looks From Hell
I received a few dirty looks while reading our graphic novel assignment this week in class. I realized that I was not the only one taken back by the intensity of the sex scenes in the novel. Wen I awkwardly tried to explain to the stranger sitting next to me that the plot of the book consisted of more than animated pornography and that it was a class assignment. I do not think she believed me at all. I am pretty sure she thought I was even more strange after I rambled on for five minutes in defense of the book and myself.

Haha! I tried to make sure no one could see the page when I was on one with sex scenes.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, closed-mindedness like that is why the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund has to exist. To the person sitting next to you, it might just be a little revulsion. To a prosecutor, it could be "obscenity", in my opinion one of the most subjective parts of criminal law.

I accidentally left my copy of From Hell at work. I'm afraid when I get back, people will have looked at it and judged me. I hope I don't get fired.
ReplyDeleteI found myself in the same boat. Someone saw me reading it during the sex scene, and they said I must be into porn. I tried to explain, too, but then I left it like it was because I thought it was funnier for them to think that. I myself was surprised, however, at how graphic some parts were.
ReplyDeleteI had this same problem. With my luck it was always when I was on a particularly sexually explicit page when someone would take a glance over or ask me what I was reading. And answering "It's for a class," seemed to make people really suspicious of me. It was very surprising how graphic our graphic novel has turned out to be.
