Another thing I wondered is if he used the name Jude in relation to John Lennon's son Julian. It may make sense because they are both the sons of some of the most famous figures in popular culture, and Jude was a musician.

And don't forget The Beatles' awesome song, "Hey Jude." I didn't think about that until I read your post, but that's a great point.
ReplyDeleteI had that song stuck in my head most of the time I was reading, actually. Although, Jude's name is supposed to be a pun of Judas coin, as in the price paid for betrayal.
ReplyDeleteI was surprised Craddock didn't use that song when he talked to Jude through the radio. The fact that he didn't made sense after it was explained that Craddock didn't listen to music and made his family listen to people talking/preaching on the radio.
ReplyDeleteI did like how Jude's musical abilities were such a stark contrast to how much Craddock prefered talk radio. If there's one thing that will put you to sleep on a long car ride, it is definitely talk radio.

ReplyDeleteTara's right to invoke the Beatles song, since Hill's Jude does indeed take a sad song and make it better. He also lets her into his heart so he can start to make it better.
Craddock also may not have used "Hey Jude," Charlie, because the rights to the lyrics would have been too expensive for Hill and his publishers to afford! But I shouldn't think about things like that while reading.
