Petty in Wonderland

I was listening to Tom Petty last week, and I remembered the music video for "Don't Come Around Here No More" is based on Alice in Wonderland. A lot of our stories have alluded to this one. I forgot to post it then, but it actually fits even better this week with all of the musical references in Heart-Shaped Box. I always liked this song and vaguely remembered seeing the music video when I was younger, but I forgot how weird the video is until I watched it again recently. You should definitely check it out. There is also an interesting article about the song on Wikipedia.

  2. Ah yes, 1985! This is pretty much how it was, in my undergraduate days ... if you guys ever wondered.

Seriously, this video is one of countless examples of Carroll's Alice being a) aged to sexual adulthood and b) simultaneously robbed of all independence, power and agency. The Alice in the original novels is far more tough-minded and admirable than the helpless and hapless victim in this video. Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland scores much better on this point.

On the other hand, Petty makes a mighty convincing Hatter, and for all the guests to periodically shift places around the tea table is straight out of Carroll's novel.
