Second Paper Topic
It's a bit early in the game for this, but since others are posting about theirs, I figured I'd go ahead and stake a claim. I'm thinking about doing something on psychopomps in Neil Gaiman's works, possibly comparing them with classic portrayals of Death. I'm really not sure yet, but I know I'd be discussing the Lady on the Gray from The Graveyard Book, Death from Sandman, and possibly Anubis and Thoth from American Gods. I'm undecided about including the latter two because they don't really fit the mold of Death or the Lady.

Seems like you'd have plenty of material for comparison just using the Graveyard Book and Sandman. If you added in American Gods, it seems like you'd be covering a lot of material in just one paper.
ReplyDeletePoint. But I think there are interesting things to be said about their role as recorders of lives, not just simple usherers (is that a word?) of souls into an afterlife or even as those records, the "coming to America" bits, as a sort of afterlife...I dunno, I'm making this up as I go.

ReplyDeleteSure, but at the point you start talking about the recording of lives, you're not really talking about their role as pyschopomps anymore, are you? I could be completely making this up, or splitting hairs, but it seems like Thoth's role as a historian or a keeper of stories is separate from the psychopomp aspect. Or maybe Anubis is more the psychopomp, actually dealing with the people...and Thoth is more the historian...I have no idea. I'ma stop talking now.
ReplyDelete...It's a two man con.

ReplyDeleteMr. Ibis's pen instead of Wednesday's violin, huh?
ReplyDeleteIt really just comes down to how much time (or words should I say) you need to spend on each to give each aspect justice. If there is room without the paper being bloated, it would be interesting to see all three.
